Breastfeeding your baby is one of the most amazing things that you could do for your little one.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with formula feeding your child. However, it is not something that I recommend.

Let’s discuss everything you need to know about colostrum.

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the most important breast milk for your child to intake. It is the very first stage of breast milk that your body will produce. This is considered to be your baby’s first immunization.


Due to colostrum possessing large quantities amount of an antibody named secretory immunoglobulin.

What does it look like?

It is a yellow-ish, creamy, off-white type of color.

Why is it so important?

Colostrum is important because it:

  • Provides fat and protein to help with healthy bone growth and muscle development
  • Passes on antibodies and nutrients to the child
  • Passes on amazing immune factors that’ll assist with the development of the immune system.

Two Main Controversies Behind Colostrum:


Colostrum before giving birth – 

There are some moms out there who actually believe that pumping the colostrum out of your breast before your little one is born and saving it before giving birth will help your child. It actually does more harm than good.

It’s rumored that if you choose to  pump too soon before labor, then you will stimulate the hormones in your body which will result in forcing you to go into an early labor. It’s also recommended by many doctors that you do not pump before giving birth to your little one.

Working out while on colostrum –

According to an article that was featured on Men’s Health, athletes are adding colostrum to their diet. One cup of breast milk possesses approximately 170caloriesin it. Therefore, athletes believe that the breast milk will help them perform better and will help them gain more muscle.

However, the effect that breast milk has on adults has never been studied. Therefore, it’s difficult for us to know for sure what the benefits of being an adult and drinking breast milk are.

One thing we know for sure though is that breast milk is extremely beneficial for infants.


Your child needs your colostrum because it is extremely nutritious and healthy. It’s technically their first immunization. Please do not neglect them the chance of experiencing their very first naturalimmunization. Regardless of pumping and regardless of breastfeeding directly, it’s completely natural.
